Canvas - Devil's Bridge, Antigua
from $40.00
Devil's Bridge is a natural rock arch located on the western shore of Antigua about half way up the island near the settlement of Willikies. This natural outcrop is made of limestone and has been eroded away from many years of the Atlantic waves created by the Trade Winds to form the arch and a number of blowholes that shoot up water and spray. The area has no safety precautions or warnings so it is technically possible to walk across the bridge, however, the steep rock cliffs and powerful waves at this site means that any fall would likely lead to the inability to get out easily leading to severe injury or even death. According to the book "To Shoot Hard Labour" recorded by Papa Smith he said that many slaves from neighbouring plantations committed suicide by throwing themselves off the bridge into the sea. Since it was an area of mass suicide, people use to say the Devil has to be there, leading it to its name today of Devil's Bridge. The bridge was only formed in the 1950s when a soft part of the limestone eroded away, asserting the strength and power of nature to contiuously wear away the coastline.
