The last solar eclipse in the continental US was August 21st, 2017 and the next will be on August 12, 2044. A solar eclipse can only happen during a new moon when the moon passes in front of the sun. They occur around 2 times per year when the orbit of the sun, moon and earth sync (which is call syzygy) and occur all over the earth evenly. Total solar eclipses allow for a glimpse of the sun’s corona, which is the outermost atmosphere of the star that is normally not visible to humans because of the sun’s brightness. Totality, or a full eclipse of the sun, can have different durations due to your location in it's path and the fluxuation of the distance of the moon to the earth (the measured distance to the moon can vary by up to 19,000 mi (30,000 km)). The corona is actually much hotter than the sun's surface at about 1.8 million degrees F (1 million degrees C) compared to 9,940 degrees F (5,500 degrees C) at the surface. When eclipses occurs a temperature drop is expected with some areas measuring up to a 10 degree drop during the 2017 eclipse. The totality will pass through 15 states while the entire continental US will see at least a partial eclipse. In Charlton, Massachusetts, the eclipse today started at 2:14pm and end at 4:38pm for a total eclipse time of 2 hours and 24 minutes with the moon covering between 90-93% of the sun. Unfortunately there was no total eclipse in Charlton this year but it was still an amazing experience to witness
